On July 8, the workshop of Baoji Nuclear Material Technology Co., Ltd. located in Baoji High-tech Zone was filled with a festive atmosphere.  On the same day, the company's 3150KW electron beam cold bed melting furnace (EB furnace for short) succeeded in trial production, and the titanium slab weighing 15 tons appeared on the scene.

Chen Yang, general manager of Baoji Nuclear Material Technology Co., LTD., introduced that this EB furnace is the core equipment of "low-cost titanium and titanium alloy material industrialization project", and the titanium slab produced this time is the largest in the country's private titanium enterprises.  The titanium slab smelted from EB furnace can be directly used in titanium roll rolling process after surface processing, which can effectively make up the metallurgical defects of traditional melting furnace.  In addition, EB furnace has purification function, which is conducive to recycling of waste materials in the process of titanium production.  

It is understood that Baoji Nuclear Material Technology Co., Ltd. started the "Low-cost titanium and titanium alloy material industrialization project" in 2020, focusing on reducing the process cost of titanium material production.  In the past two years, the company has made concerted efforts to overcome various difficulties and ensure the progress of the project.  With the formal application of EB furnace, the company has formed an annual production capacity of 1000 tons of pipes and 5000 tons of titanium and titanium alloy plates, providing technical support for the realization of the goal of "production of 11,000 tons of titanium and titanium alloy materials" at the end of the "14th Five-year Plan".  

Not long ago, the company's "13.5 tons of large coil weight and wide titanium strip coil" from EB furnace was identified by industry experts as having the leading level in China.  The appearance of 15 tons of titanium slab lays a solid foundation for the mass production of large-weight and wide-width titanium tape coils.  "The advantage of large coil weight and wide titanium strip coil can greatly reduce the cost for later welding process, and it also avoid possible defects in the welding process, which has a positive contribution to the strong chain repairing of titanium industry."  Chen Yang said that with the continuous expansion of titanium material transport field, large weight and wide titanium tape roll will be more and more popular, with a very broad market prospect.
