Titanium Processing — Water Cutting Technology Analysis

Jul 08, 2024

In the field of titanium material processing, although laser cutting is widely used, the heat generated will not only cause oxidation of the cutting surface, but may also cause thermal deformation of the product. In order to overcome these limitations, titanium companies began to turn to water cutting technology. As a more efficient and low-temperature processing method, water cutting technology, with its unique low-temperature processing characteristics, not only effectively avoids the oxidation and thermal deformation of materials due to high temperature, but also because of its high efficiency and environmental protection advantages, it has shown great potential and value in the field of titanium processing.

Overview of water cutting technology

Water cutting processing, that is, the use of ultra-high pressure technology to pressurize tap water to a high pressure of 250-400MPa, and then through a gem nozzle with an inner hole diameter of about 0.10-0.35mm, forming a high-speed jet with a speed of 800-1000m/s, this high-speed jet is commonly known as "waterjet".Because of its high energy characteristics, this waterjet is widely used in the cutting of soft-based materials. In the water cutting process of titanium materials, an appropriate amount of abrasive materials, such as quartz sand, emery, etc., are usually added to the waterjet to enhance its cutting ability. The process of water cutting generally starts with perforating the titanium material, then cutting with a knife at a certain speed, and finally the collector accommodates and eliminates the sand flow and water flow generated during cutting.

Titanium and titanium alloy water cutting parameters

When cutting titanium and titanium alloys by water, water pressure, sand flow and cutting rate are important parameters that affect the cutting quality.According to the thickness and hardness of the titanium plate, the operator needs to accurately adjust these parameters to achieve the best cutting effect.

Advantages and disadvantages of water cutting technology

Advantage

1. Low-temperature processing: Water cutting is a cold processing method. The temperature of the workpiece is low, there is no heat-affected zone, and thermal deformation will not be caused when cutting.                                          2. Wide range of applications: water cutting can not only handle titanium and titanium alloys, but also suitable for cutting a variety of materials.

Disadvantage

1. Large nozzle loss: Due to the use of high-pressure water flow, the gem nozzle of the waterjet equipment loses quickly and needs to be replaced regularly.                                            2. Blade residue on the cutting surface: For titanium plates that are too thick (such as more than 10mm), water cutting may have blade residue or bevel on the cutting surface

In general, water cutting technology provides a new choice for the processing of titanium and titanium alloys, and its low-temperature processing characteristics are excellent in avoiding thermal deformation and oxidation. However, for specific processing needs, such as the cutting of thick plates, further technical optimization and parameter adjustment are required.
