There are many types of coking wastewaters, from source of generating wastewater, including water in coking coal, water directly converted from steam during process of recovering and refining coked product, water added in process medium or washing dissolving salt, water introduced together with diluted chemical agent, water added for cleaning process pipeline equipment, water for cleaning oil tank, etc., and from aspect of drainage way, including residual ammonia water separated from coke oven gas condensate, separated water of process medium in process of recovering and refining coked product, and other sewages, belonging to industrial wastewater difficult to process. In the present time, biochemical process is mainly adopted to process coking wastewater, which takes comparatively good effect on removing phenol and benzene materials in the wastewater but is comparatively poor in processing some difficultly degradable organic materials such as quinolines, indoles, pyridines and carbazoles. Therefore, CODcr of discharged water in coking industry fails to satisfy first-class standard.

In processing organic wastewater by electrolysis method, electrode not only functions as transmitting current but catalyzes oxidative degradation of the organic material; therefore, selection of electrode material will directly affect effect of degrading the organic material. Evolution of anode oxygen (or evolution of chlorine for wastewater containing much more Cl- ions) will accompany with electro-catalytic oxidation, which is to say, a high oxygen evolution over-potential is necessary for catalysis electrode.

Coking wastewater mainly comes from coking, gas purification and chemical products of refined process, including dedusting sewage, final cooling water, the residual ammonia, tar refining separation water, crude benzene separation of water and gas pipe water seal water and ancient Malone wastewater, etc., the residual ammonia and chemical products of refined process medium separation water belongs to the high concentration of coking wastewater, the residual ammonia for coking plant main emission source, The waste water accounted for more than half of the total plant emissions. The quantity and water quality of coking wastewater are very different because of the different technology and refining depth of chemical products used in coking plants.
