Existing problems and prospects of titanium and titanium alloys
Mar 07, 2023
Although titanium and titanium alloys have achieved remarkable development, but the existing problems have also been exposed, and the development of titanium alloys is also facing no small challenges. It is mainly reflected in the following three aspects:
1) Output
Although China is a big country in titanium industry, the quantity of high-quality products is not high and the types of titanium products with special properties are few. Secondly, China is not able to produce titanium strips and titanium extruded profiles in batch and stable, which limits the development and utilization of titanium and titanium alloys in aerospace, Marine and other fields. It is still very difficult to further increase the titanium consumption of aeroengines to about 50%.
2) Performance
Because titanium metal has high chemical activity, easy to be polluted by other elements, so the processing and manufacturing process of titanium alloy is very high, at the same time, the processing of high performance products need and comprehensive consideration of its mechanical, physical, chemical, technological properties, the existing titanium alloy above 600℃, Creep resistance and the sharp decline of oxidation resistance at high temperature are the two main obstacles limiting the expansion of application of titanium alloy.
3) Cost
At present, countries are trying to reduce the application cost of titanium alloy, has made a lot of achievements, but in terms of our current situation, our management and technical level has not reached an ideal height, domestic titanium alloy product price in the international competitiveness is poor, is not conducive to further expansion of use.
At present, the main application field of titanium alloy is aerospace and other military industrial sectors. The development of new application fields, such as automobiles, trains, high-speed rail, and civilian areas commonly used in daily life are still very broad application prospects. In addition, replacing expensive alloy elements with cheaper elements and reducing the cost of titanium alloy parts by technological means is an important topic in the future titanium alloy research work. Titanium alloys for high-end applications will be used in various fields in the future when they can be manufactured at a low cost.
