How do we store hypochlorous acid solution?
Feb 14, 2025
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) solution is relatively unstable and easy to decompose, proper storage is essential to maintain its effectiveness and ensure safety. Here are the key guidelines for storing hypochlorous acid solution:
- Light Protection: Hypochlorous acid solution is sensitive to light, especially ultraviolet (UV) light, which accelerates its decomposition. Therefore, it should be stored in light-proof containers (such as brown glass bottles or dark plastic containers) and kept in a cool, shaded place.
- Low-Temperature Storage: Hypochlorous acid solution decomposes easily at high temperatures. It is recommended to store it in a cool environment, ideally at a temperature between 4°C and 15°C. Avoid exposure to high temperatures or direct sunlight.
- Airtight Storage: Hypochlorous acid solution can react with carbon dioxide in the air, leading to its degradation. Therefore, it must be stored in tightly sealed containers to minimize contact with air.
- Avoid Contact with Organic Matter or Reducing Agents: Hypochlorous acid solution is a strong oxidizing agent and should be kept away from organic materials, reducing agents, or other flammable substances to prevent chemical reactions or hazards.
- Use Suitable Containers: Hypochlorous acid solution can corrode certain metals and plastics. It is recommended to use containers made of corrosion-resistant materials, such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), or glass.
- Short-Term Storage: Hypochlorous acid solution is unstable, and even with proper storage, its active chlorine content will gradually decrease over time. Therefore, it is advisable to prepare and use it immediately, avoiding long-term storage.
- Clear Labeling: Storage containers should be clearly labeled with the solution name, concentration, preparation date, and expiration date for proper management and use.
