3.1.4 Mining and application of titanium ore

Currently, Australia, Canada, South Africa, Norway, and Russia have the largest production volume of ilmenite, followed by India, the United States, Malaysia and other countries; the largest production volume of natural rutile is Australia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, the United States and other countries. my country's titanium ore is mainly mined and produced in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Yunnan and Sichuan Panzhihua: the main product is ilmenite concentrate, and there is also a small amount of rutile concentrate.

More than 90% of the world’s titanium ore is used for the production of titanium dioxide, about 4% -5% of the titanium ore is used for the production of titanium metal, and the remaining titanium ore is used for the production of welding electrodes, alloys, carbides, ceramics, glass and chemicals. Wait.

The natural rutile concentrate is of high grade and low impurity. It is a high-quality raw material for the production of titanium tetrachloride by chlorination. Therefore, it is mostly used in the production of titanium dioxide and metallic titanium by the chloride method, and can also be used as a raw material for the manufacture of welding electrodes and metallurgy.

The TiO2 grade of ilmenite concentrate is generally 45% ~ 60%, which contains a large amount of iron and other impurities. In addition to being directly used as a raw material for the production of titanium dioxide by the sulfuric acid method, it generally needs to be enriched and processed into (High) Titanium slag or artificial rutile is then used to produce titanium dioxide and metallic titanium. Artificial rutile and reduced ilmenite can be used as raw materials for manufacturing welding electrodes.
